Innovating the Future

Are you ready to shape the future? More importantly, are you prepared to take the action necessary to transform your business model into one which embraces a culture of innovation, where innovating becomes part of the everyday? Put bluntly, if you don’t start to act soon you may well find your business overtaken by events as technological changes transform the workplace.

Last year I wrote about a combined Deloitte and Oxford University study which revealed that 35% of current jobs would no longer be in existence in 20 years time. Now Deloitte have followed up on that study to analyse the impact of the changing job market. According to the report, the good news is that whilst technology has potentially contributed to the loss of 800,000 low skilled jobs it has also given rise to some 3.5 million new jobs which are higher skilled and attract higher salaries. In essence, routine jobs are being replaced by technological options leaving the workforce free to undertake more complex tasks which may require a higher degree of positive interaction. This means that workers are becoming more highly skilled, paving the way for innovating new business models in which everyone contributes positively to the creation of long lasting solutions and customer excellence.

With empowered and skilled employees displaying an entrepreneurial attitude the way is open for organisations to transform themselves by building a culture of innovation. So the challenge for leaders is now to take control of their organisation’s destiny; to shape the future before the future shapes them.
